FAQ - Hosting/Using Images & Avatars & Smilies

This guide was written to explain how board administrators, moderators & members can use Images/Avatars & Smilies on a Runboard forum.

Firstly Runboard DOES NOT PROVIDE Image Hosting or any other uploading Service. You must find 3rd party hosts if you wish to use them.

There are very few Free image hosts that permit hotlinking (Storing files with sole purpose of linking to them for other sites/forums.)
Cheating the measures taken by hosts to prevent hotlinking is considered bandwidth theft and is NOT supported by Runboard.

For a list of free image upload sites see
http://bakheva.runboard.com/t8738

Once you have uploaded your image/avatar/smilie, it can then be used on Runboard. You will need to know the url (Url means uniform resource locator which is the link that points to the image. I.e. http://myimagehost.com/myusername/myimage.jpg

1. Avatars
Whats an avatar?
An avatar is a personal image that can be used by members of Runboard.
They appear next to your posts (below your Membername)

Avatars should usually be 60x60 pixels. Although slightly bigger images can be used. Board administrators can limit them to 60x60 (or not) by going to:
Control Panel > Manage Board > Set misc options
Tick 'Use the Resize user avatars (personal icons) feature:' to turn on auto resize or leave blank for no auto resize.
Board Administrators can also tick 'Display user avatars (personal icons):' if they wish to disable all avatars on their forum.

To edit/change your avatar goto Control panel > Change Miscellaneous Settings > In the box next to Personal icon URL 60x60 pixels (optional): paste the url of your image > Then submit info.

NOTE: If you change your avatar it will change your avatar in ALL of your topics/reply on ALL Runboard forums.

2. Images
Board administrators can use an image in a header using the normal html tags
<img src="http://myimagehost.com/myusername/myimage.jpg">

If this image is a header it also can be added in the Edit Layout/Colors page.
Control Panel > Manage Board > Edit Layout/Colors > Community Logo Options
Put the direct URL of the image there aswell as its height and width.

Members can include images in posts. (NOTE BBCode is used instead of html as below.)
You can use Runboard formatting or type the code yourself.
On the pages either Posting New Topic or Adding a Reply, below the post icons click Insert Image.
A javascript box should then appear asking you for the url of the image. (Ie. http://www.myimagehost.com/myimage.jpg)
Click Ok and the code for the image should appear at the end of your message.

You can type the code manually
[img]http://www.myimagehost.com/myimage.jpg[/img]

You attach a link to the image (So when clicked it goes to that page)
[url=http://www.pointstothisurl.com][img]http://www.myimagehost.com/myusername/myimage.jpg[/img][/url]

NOTE Any oversized image may affect the board layout.

Images and links can also be used in your signatures (Sigs) and must also be done in BBCode. To edit your sig goto
Control Panel > Change Miscellaneous Options > Type your sig in the Signature box.

NOTE: If you change your signature it will NOT change your signature in of your currently posted messages. So its best to test your signature in an appropriate forum.

3. Smilies
Smilies are the little tiny images that you can use when posting messages on the board. These are also sometimes referred to as posticons and emoticons.
These can be animated or non-animated. emoticon emoticon emoticon

i) Using Posticons
There are two options when posting a topic/reply in a forum.
You can select a posticon which will appear next to the topic/reply title. Click the O to the right of your chosen post icon (Optional)
I.E. emoticon This Is My Topic

You are limited to the posticons selected by the board administrator. A forum will start off with a default set (non-animated)

If your a board administrator it is discussed in ii) & iii) Where to find and how to add/change posticons/smilies.

i) Using Smilies
Smilies are also optional and are usually used in posts to suggest the mood/feeling of the poster.
If there is something funny emoticon or Sad emoticon etc.

Runboard forums came with a selection of default (non-animated smilies) but you can use these or even use your own.
If you wish to use a smilie, When you are on the add topic/reply page click a smilie from the predefined selection.
The code for it should then appear at the end of the text in the message box.

If you are familiar with the code for the smilie you can type it instead.

If you wish to use your own smilie in your post like Image then post it like you would any other image in your post.

If you are the board administrator of a forum you can add/change the smilies and also define the code that is typed for each one. This is covered in sections ii) & iii) on where to find smilies and how to add/change them.

ii) Finding Smilies
There are tonnes of places on the net where you can find smilies of all types.
Here are some with more than enough to get you started.
NOTE: Some of these hosts may or may not allow you to directly link to the smilies so you may have to host them yourself (See the top of this guide for some good hosts).

Planet Smilies
My Smilies
JM.G.Free Smileys
Click Smilies
Emoticons4U
Web Smilies

A collection of smilies in 6 different color schemes is available here:

http://www.rbbt.net/picons/rb-default-smilies.ZIP

Now you have found some you need to know how to add them.

iii) Adding Smilies
Board administrators can add/change predefined smilies for your board by going to
Control Panel > Manage Board > Manage The Posticons
You will a see a list of the current smilies, the image urls

The default setting for all smilies is 15 pixels of width and 15 pixels of height.

To Add A Smilie in a empty box type (or paste) the url for your smilie > Click 'change Posticons'. Then re-enter and you will be able to select whether to use the smilie as a posticon (Use In Title), use it in the body (As a clickable smilie), what is typed for the smilie to appear and you should also see a preview of the smilie.

To delete a smilie clear the image url and then click 'change Posticons'

- Image/Smilie/Avatar Troubleshooting -
If you smilie/avatar/image does not show up it may be for the following reasons.

A) Your host does not allow hotlinking (IE Geocities)
B) The image is unavailable because you have gone over your bandwidth limit
C) The url of the image is incorrect (Note Case sensitivity - If the image filename was in lowercase ensure the filename in the url is in lowercase.)
