Some Smaller Ideas
Hi all, just popping by. Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving!
I have a few suggestions that I don't think really need their own threads, though maybe if any idea is popular with some people it can be expanded on.
The easiest idea is to have the ability to add a simple table to our post. Along with the buttons that allow you to insert links and images, there could be one where you could make a table and choose the number of rows and columns and title the headers and things. It's kind of comparable to the poll feature, in that it might not be used very often, but could be a helpful tool.
Next up, I think as an added security measure, the user should fill out three "security questions" WHEN they make a board. Doing this will basically ensure that someone who is using a board owner's computer can not delete their board. I know we have the password check when deleting a board, which is very helpful, but I think having security questions would be helpful. Because, someone using an administrator's computer may also have access to their email and be able to request their password. And I say three questions is a good idea simply in case someone forgets some of the answers. I know I sound cynical here, but it's just an idea for security measures
This next one is more of a pipe dream than anything, but it would be awesome if there was a way for Runboard to "recover" old pictures that don't work any more - particularly in avatars and signatures. Seeing all of these picky image sites that keep deleting photos or requesting hundreds of dollars for hosting (Photobucket, TinyPic), it just came to mind. All of the missing pictures (particularly in avatars and signatures) are sad
My last suggestion is nitpicky, but it may also be an easily fixable thing that has unintentionally been implemented? When you go to Control Panel > Board Management, many of the boards you have access to pop-up two to three times, depending on the type of access you have on that board. While I can see the benefits of the different roles being listed under "Boards you have special access to," I think when the boards are listed under Board Management it seems confusing to have boards listed twice (since that doesn't indicate the different roles you have).
I hope all of these ideas make sense, but I am probably rambling quite a bit None of these ideas are necessary, but just some small ideas I've had over the past few months

Re: Some Smaller Ideas
We can make tables now, although it hasn't been announced because the feature is still pretty rough and quirky. For starters, you wouldn't want to put carriage returns outside of any of the td or tr tags, because it will leave a huge gap in your post. Click/tap on "quote" to see the code:
asoidfjaso adfadoi asdfoaisdfj | oai adofijaosdfij | joai oieja | oiasdjf ajodifj | oaiduf aiodfj | oaidjf ijaoijfoiej |
On your second idea, some colleagues and I were actually talking yesterday about changing trends in the way people make online payments. Imagine if someone stole a purse that had a phone and driver license in it, and the owner of that phone had chosen their birth date to unlock their phone. The purse thief might not know this, but it would be easy enough to try it and see if it works when they have the owner's ID that has their birth date on it. Now, along the lines of what you're saying, that same thief could easily access the phone owner's email, if they are constantly logged into it through an app.
That said, some random phone thief probably won't know that this person has a Runboard account, much less a message board, but if the thief is someone who knows the person, and knows what username the person uses on Runboard, I can see how the phone thief (or someone on a shared computer) could cause some real damage.
So yes, I agree that it could be a good idea to add security questions/answers for board deletions. However, would we want to require every moderator to answer these things just to delete an offensive post (or two, or several)?
I don't think we'd be able to implement your last suggestion, but it would be nice if we could offer image hosting, perhaps as a premium perk.

Re: Some Smaller Ideas
Hi Less, and thanks for your response!
It's cool that the table is at least an option (though not totally viable, of course), guess you learn something new every day.
I'm glad the second idea makes some sense. It is tough to find where to draw the line on when these questions must be answered, though I think most people would probably not get far with deleting posts/threads. And yes, most phone thieves would probably not care or have better things to do with a phone to suit their needs. I think most of this would come down to people related to the board owner.
Yeah, a couple of these things being premium features may not be a bad idea. I would like to upgrade to a premium account, but can't at the moment, but think restricting some more stuff to premium may encourage more sales. Hmmm...

Re: Some Smaller Ideas
Tables are a royal pain to work with IMHO. When I want to use them, I put the table together in a text editor first, then I copy and paste the finished results into the post.
If I do this, and I post tech content way more than most, then it should be obvious the current table feature is not ready for the general public.

Re: Some Smaller Ideas
I agree. Although the table feature can be handy as-is, it can be quite cumbersome for anyone who's trying to post a table with more than a few rows and/or columns.
