Global HoH revamp
The current method of presenting the Global Hall of Honor makes it virtually impossible for new users to break into the top 500 posters or top 20 in the Karma rankings. As a result, after 15+ years of data collection, the current system makes the pages virtually irrelevant to everyone.
I suggest a new formula for these Runboard pages where both posts and karma be ranked based on users yearly average in both messages and karma.
Under this system, new users to our community would have a chance to appear in both of these pages which would bring relevance back to the ranking displays.

Re: Global HoH revamp
I like your way of thinking on this, but I would also like to keep what we have now in addition to your idea, with the default being in line with your idea. That way, newer people don't have to compete with anyone who has been here since the beginning to make it on these lists, as you say, but they would also have an opportunity to bypass some of our legendary posters of yesteryear.
For the average, what would be the pros and cons of choosing a year over, say, 6 months or some other time frame?

Re: Global HoH revamp
The advantages of using a yearly average is the initial ease in re-coding on Thor's side and the intuitive understanding and motivation on the part of the users to stick with a message board community for at least a year. The downside, as far as I can tell, is much the same as the current system if Thor wants to watch for trends or spot possible spammers before the system has been flooded by those miscreants.

Re: Global HoH revamp
I doubt actual spammers would make it on the HoH, no matter what time frame we choose.
But this brings up another question. What about legitimate members who routinely make one-word or one-smiley posts? We have at least a couple of boards on our system that actually encourage that with word association games and what-not which is fine, but it isn't actual discussion. Do you think we should include such posts in our HoH stats, or should there be a character minimum to count as an actual post for this purpose?

Re:
I think that any post by a legitimate poster should count. I am sure those one word posters feel they are joining in even if it isn't discernible conversation to us.

Re: Global HoH revamp
Late, but I think those posts should be included. They repesent activity and participation here on Runboard.
Granted, one-word posts do not require a lot of time and thought, but I don't think we should judge the quality of posts (except spammers).
