Re: Blog = Members Market Place!?!
Oh, another idea:
What if we unlock the blog option for members after a certain number of days / posts?
That would allow trusted members to have a blog, but spammers couldn't use it. And I doubt they want to wait for a week, or so.

Re: Blog = Members Market Place!?!
I like that last idea. Even an hour might be enough to keep most spammers from posting in the blog, since most seem to be bots that post as soon as the accounts are activated.

Firle you are a genius! I would say 24 hours to stop some (or most) of the "hired spammers" that create multiple accounts then post their spam a few hours later in the accounts they have created.

Re:
One of the things I do use on a system is the blog and having a system wide blog feed I thought was terrific. It's just a crying shame that there are spammers spoiling it. It's a shame that there isn't a spam filter on RB that can detect the spam and automatically hide that blog post link from the Blogs Feed.
If the majority of spamming is by bots (I don't understand how spamming on a massive scale works) - but what about if instead of a blog post being automatically fed to the blogs feed the system could be changed/set up for members to have to manually have to click to add their post to the feed as they post it.
I have no idea how hard that would be to be done though. Just a thought.

You are full of pleasant surprises, Sandy. First with the designing and understanding of CSS, and now this. The thing that annoys me most about blog spam is that it bumps legitimate posts out of the blog roll, so I don't know why I wasn't thinking more along those lines. Thank you! If you come up with any more ideas like this, please don't hesitate to let me know.
This is what I came home to today. I pixelated the only legitimate post, and the rest are spam. These 7 spam posts were made within 9 hours' time.

Re:
I have known of the existence of your blog feed for a long time and in actual fact have for years suggested to Yuku that they implement something along similar lines. People aren't going to use blogs if no one visits them and if there is no way to find out who on the system has posted then the blogs fall into nonentities.
Blogs where there is a blog feed are a terrific way to find new friends individually and to start getting to know people along with a brilliant way to encourage people to visit ones board.
Blogs like this within a board system can be a tremendous asset, not only to members but to the system as a whole, as long as there is also a blog feed. No blogs feed and the blogs do no more good than putting ones status on our profile.
I have noticed the spam on the blogs feed and it infuriates me. I despise spammers. No one is going to bother to read down reams of spam blog posts to find a genuine one.
Whilst I understand that having a blog feed that is 90% spam seems hardly worth keeping active I believe it would be a mistake simply to remove it. I honestly think that heads should be put together by the staff to figure out a way to beat the spamming instead.
I do also think Firles idea of only allowing the activation of blogs after a specific amount of time is a great one.
I also notice that there is no way to get notification of a blog reply. If a blog owner doesn't notice a reply and acknowledge it then people aren't going to leave replies. If no replies then people aren't going to keep making blog posts. So if the staff decide to do an update of the blogs maybe an email notification of replies could be thought about?
