Okay, I installed the "Apple_Emoji_1.0d1e6.ttf" font which has some of the emoji smilies but not the one I was using for the test and all of them are black&white... the font is found here...

Yay! The Internet Software Archives had the Symbola font (here) and when I installed Symbola613.ttf the emoji pics showed up in the FireFox browser (B&W) but It's the best I could figure out and at least that beats the rectangles with numbers in them...

Nope! From what I can tell this is a combination of support mismatches. Some browsers provide all the support needed via extensions (like Chrome) while others depend on the devices operating system (like FireFox).

Chromoji is the way to go if using the Chrome browser (full color emoji support).

The font sets I discovered allow b&w renditions of the emoji in FireFox in Windows Vista and Windows 7 (you confirmed native Windows 8 support).

Onward to Opera...

Re: Emoji smiley thingies...

Opera was odd... I found (this Opera extension) that lets Opera use any of the Chrome browser extensions. So while Opera itself doesn't provide browser support for emoji images the browser does provide a way to use Chromes (Chromoji) extension to get full color emoji support...

On to Maxthon...
