Forum and Topic Borders

Is there a way to use a border image instead of just a color? I would like to use a strip/ribbon on my forum and topic tables.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Jewel,

I cannot see your practice board so I'll just have to "wing it." The short answer is no, you can not use a image for the border. But you CAN fake it in three ways.

The first way is to use a graphic image set or tied to a content or wrapper div in your HTML and then style the div using CSS. That is the way we had to do it in the past.

The second way is to use the CSS box-shadow to simulate the ribbon graphic. The coding for this will look huge but you can do some amazing things that way.

The third way is to use a background graphic that the forum and topic lists sit on top of.

Examples:

method #1 is almost simulated in the Celtic Challenge skin.

method #2 is almost simulated on a board I am currently building over here though I used the box-shadow there to circle the whole board AND I kept the shadow really simple.

method #3 is used in the Candy Land skin.

Dag dab it I hit the submit button instead of the preview button! emoticon

If you take a look at the three ways to do this and decide which one you want to try then either Lesigner Girl or I can help on the coding side.

emoticon You might get tired of me... I totally forgot about CSS3's border-image property that lets you use a image for your border but the way it works is tricky. Do you want the ribbon to go all the way around the forum and topics lists?

That last one would be a great idea, but unfortunately, more than 65% of our Internet Explorer users wouldn't be able to see border-image, thanks to Microsoft dragging their heels as usual.
quote:

The border-image property is supported in Internet Explorer 11, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari 6.

Opera supports an alternative, the -o-border-image property.

Safari 5 supports an alternative, the -webkit-border-image property.
