Re: !@#$%&
We're all being too nice for a topic titled, "!@#$%&," and I think this !@#$%& topic can use a good rant, so here goes.
One of my pet peeves is dealing with support techs who are either not qualified to do their jobs, or don't pay attention to what they're being told, or both. If someone is hired to do tech support for a search engine, I would expect them to at least have a basic idea of how links work, because half of a search engine bot's job is following links. I don't expect most people to know how links work, though, so for the following rant to make sense, I'll explain it.
<a href="http://twitter.com......
Regardless of what comes after that, if it says <a href="http://twitter.com/anything-else-can-go-here">, it's a link to Twitter.
<a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=HTML5, CSS3, and Responsive Design+http%3A%2F%2Fmywebsite.com%2F2013%2F05%2Fhtml5-css3-responsive-design%2F&source=MyWebSite.Com">
The above link will go to Twitter's tweeting form, and automatically fill in "HTML5, CSS3, and Responsive Design," along with a link to that blog post, and show MyWebSite.com as the source. This way, people can easily Tweet a link to the blog post with its title in only two clicks, without having to type or paste anything in if they don't want to.
I repeat, it is a link to Twitter. The encoded URL to my blog post and the source=MyWebSite.Com part of it are variables that Twitter uses, and the source=MyWebSite.Com part is NOT a part of any address on my blog.
Like I said, I don't expect most people to know this, but I DO expect search engine support techs to at least know it's a link to Twitter, and NOT a link to any page on my website.
That said, what you are about to see may scare you, but I am purposely being overly dramatic because this is The Flaming Hell, plus it's directed at a big company that is apparently too cheap to hire people who are actually qualified to do their jobs.
Ready? Here goes!
I @&%#@*& hate Bing. Their bots are seeing links like this one:
<a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=HTML5, CSS3, and Responsive Design+http%3A%2F%2Fmywebsite.com%2F2013%2F05%2Fhtml5-css3-responsive-design%2F&source=MyWebSite.Com">
...and for some reason, they think they're supposed to de-code the part I put in red above and spider this part of it:
http://mywebsite.com/2013/05/html5-css3-responsive-design&source=MyWebSite.Com
That address does not exist! When Bingbot tries to access a non-existent URL like that, it wastes my bandwidth and adds an error to my logs! It also gives Bingbot a 404 error code, which TELLS Bingbot (and other bots, and humans) that the page doesn't exist! The &source=MyWebSite.Com part of that is a TWITTER SHARE VARIABLE in a TWITTER URL, and I even encoded my own URL in those share links in an attempt to make Bing stop doing this!
I explained this to them as well as I could, and what do they respond with?
quote: We are still currently investigating where our bots are finding these URLs. For further investigation, we would like to request for the following information:
1. Does the Source/ Title URL parameter important in your website? Or are these useless parameters?
2. Could you provide us with your sitemap listing all valid URLs for your website.
Bad grammar in question #1 aside...
As I already told you, you $%&@#* incompetent @#$%&, they are TWITTER links and TWITTER variables, NOT links to pages on my site! I don't have a $&@#$%& sitemap to give you, I'm not going to waste my time creating one for you incompetent &#$%@s, and you don't even NEED a $&@#$%& sitemap, because I already $&@#$%& explained to you that those are @&%#@*& SHARE links at the bottom of EVERY SINGLE $&@#$%& BLOG POST, and I even gave you some @&%#@*& examples!
Two days ago, Bingbots tried to spider 47 non-existent pages within 16 minutes, and if their @&%#@*& search bar didn't come installed automatically on Internet @&%#@*& Exploder, thus prompting many people to use their cruddy @&%#@*& search engine, I would have blocked Bingbot from my site a long $&@#$%& time ago.
Bingbots are the ONLY supposedly-legitimate bots that do this. Google doesn't do this. Yahoo doesn't do this. Even A-O $&@#$%& Hell doesn't do this. So why can't Bing get it right? Why is it like pulling teeth just to explain to Bing's so-called technical support what Bingbot is doing very, very $&@#$%& wrong?
Here are the times on the errors that were logged by Bingbot doing exactly as I described above, and there were 4 different Bingbots involved this time around (as you can see by their IPs). 47 $&@#$%& 404s in only 16 $&@#$%& minutes!

Thank you for this !@#$%& topic, GilM!
