Extended downtimes for database cleanup

Thor has been doing a major database cleanup since Thursday, and will be doing some more this week. Since there is so much to clean up, he's doing it in segments, rather than keeping RB down for several hours in one shot.

Once the cleanup is finished, backups should go much more quickly, because there will be a lot less to back up.

He's doing this immediately after each regularly scheduled backup, and if you try to access Runboard during this time, you'll see:

quote:

The site is under maintenance. Downtime is expected to last for about 1 hour. Reason: Database clean-up.

There will also be a link to the chat room, so feel free to pop in there while you wait.

Sorry for the inconvenience with the extended downtimes, but once this is finished, we can all celebrate shorter downtimes than we had before this cleanup started.

Re: Extended downtimes for database cleanup

Hi Lesa,

I am not sure if this related to the database clean-up, but after last night's extended downtime I keep getting the AVAST malware warning everytime I try to open my board or any Runboard page for that matter.

Image

I am also unable to get into the Control Panel and AVAST keeps giving me this error

EDIT:

There is something wrong with my AVAST picking-up all these errors with Runboard, I turned AVAST off and everything is working fine again.

I don't get any warnings with my anti-virus, and don't see why you should, either.

VirusTotal and URLVoid both say your board is safe.

Did you click on the "more information" link they provided? Maybe that will give us some idea of why it's displaying that warning.

Hi Lesa,

Yes, I clicked on the link in the notification but it's not taking me anywhere. I think this is related to my computer, as I am not getting any errors now that I logged in from work. I will probably need to un-install avast and re-install it again, as it seems to be playing up.

Re: Extended downtimes

This is what I suspect, too. When researching your issue, I saw claims by Avast that they don't throw up false positives, but I also saw a lot of people saying otherwise, suddenly being blocked out of perfectly good websites they've been visiting for a while.

For the record, I've been using the free version of AVG for years, and I've never had a problem with it.

Re:

Thanks Lesa,

I also found an explanation for this and it is caused by avast (details HERE). They confirmed the error, so hopefully when I get back home and the virus definitions are updated, it will go away.

Sorry for the false alarm emoticon

Re: Extended downtimes for database cleanup

No worries, Jalal. I'm just glad you found the announcement, and if anyone else has experienced this today, it can help them, too. emoticon

Here's that announcement from Avast:
quote:

False positive issue with virus defs 110411-1
April 11th, 2011

Virus definition update 110411-1 contained an error that resulted in a good number of innocent sites being flagged as infected. Generally, all sites with a script in a specific format were affected.

Our virus lab staff discovered the problem quickly after releasing the bogus update and immediately started working on a fix. The fix was released about 45 minutes after the problematic update and has version number 110411-2. Anyone who still has this problem is kindly asked to manually update the definitions to the latest version, e.g. by right-clicking the avast taskbar icon (the orange (a) ball), and selecting Update -> Engine and Virus Definitions.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. As this typically only affected remote sites (and not local files), simply updating to the latest definitions should completely solve the issue (no local files have been quarantined).

Re: Extended downtimes for database cleanup

Speaking of coincidental timing, AVG alerted me when I went to ImageShack less than an hour ago.

I wonder if it was also a false positive, and posted about it here.
