adding a blur?

Image

OK, this banner image is already 667px wide so I don't know if it can be done but what I would like to do is create a blur on either side of the image so it will blend in with (or better, fade into) the background color (showing at the top), it is ok to add to the banner but I would like to keep it at 762px or less width wise.

I would also like to get rid of the darker shading that is underneath my two link buttons but the feathers are in the way for a simple cut-n-paste of the "clean" color shown on either side... I would like to keep the shadow effect around the hanging flag/banner though if that is possible.

Any help for that?

Re: adding a blur?

Ouch! Yes I did miss it... That looks great but since the boards name (based on alliances in a RPG) can change along with the number of members (which I didn't know when I started) I am moving the text portion off of the original banner and making those two items a <h1> and <h2> entry in the html (styling and positioning via css). If you could fix the new one I posted here that would be super...
