Re: Pop-ups

That's a good question, B. I have actually scanned an installation file with two or three different malware scanners before installing a program, look carefully at each step to make sure I'm not opting in to something I don't want, and still end up with malware. The last time was when I updated my video converter that I never had problems with in the past, but I think I got it from one of their mirrors.

I don't know how the malware gets past the scanners, and it's annoying as heck.

I can tell you that WinPatrol is pretty good at catching certain things after they're installed. When Scotty the Watchdog pops up and asks if I want to allow access to a program I'd never heard of before, I know it's time to run Malwarebytes.

I have been getting some of my peeps lately saying the same thing, and it only happens when they come over to runboard.

What are they seeing? Ad links in posts?

I discovered a site that everyone can use. Be sure to bookmark it, and use it every time you download a new program or update an existing one.

https://www.virustotal.com/

You can either download the file and upload it to VirusTotal before installing it, or you can paste the URL to the download in and scan it that way. However, you will get different results from both methods.

I just got a new laptop a few days ago, and am still downloading programs that I use on a regular basis. I had Freemake Video Converter on my old laptop, and remembered getting malware from it. Once I got rid of the malware, the program still worked, but it was a real nuisance. I didn't remember where I had downloaded it from before, so after I downloaded it and before I installed it, I uploaded the file to VirusTotal, and 5 out of 52 malware scanners detected OpenCandy.

When I ran the URL to the download instead of uploading the file, only 3 sources said it had malware, and didn't specify what that malware was.

If the file was scanned by VirusTotal before, it will give you the previous result. Whether it has been scanned before or not, you can have it scan the file on the spot, for the most updated information.

You're welcome! emoticon That site has kept me from downloading one program so far, and it's just too bad I didn't discover it before I got that SearchProtect garbage from the RAR Extractor Frog.
