Re: Being able to delete ones own posts
I'm not a forum admin, but I was wondering if there has been any further thoughts/progress on this?
Is the forum admin now able to select for their forum members to be able to delete their own posts?
Just thought I'd ask here rather than my forum admin...
If it's a feature that's switchable by the forum admin then I'll request it be turned on
And if it is an option, is it a on/off for all members or can a memberlist be created to select which members have access to delete their own posts? (for example if some forums have varying membership levels, this could be a feature restricted to members with higher levels of access).

Re: Being able to delete ones own posts
A board member's request has brought me to what seems to be an ongoing conversation of some three years standing. I am impressed by so many reasonable comments made, pro and con.
On other boards I have seen the tool abused by posters. Say, for example, a member says a snarky or hurtful thing directed at a fellow member. Fellow member responds to the attack. Original poster either sanitizes the initial post or deletes it entirely. Of course, this is not quite fair of the original poster. It takes undue advantage of the feature. (This, however, is easily dealt with. Second member simply quotes the hurtful comment in a post, and there it is for all to see.)
On the other hand, and speaking personally, I am partial to the notion that every member of my board has the right to control her or his posts. So I can see the issue from both sides.
Somewhere upthread the suggestion is made that a member can simply edit a post to the nub, to a single asterix even. This may be the way to go. Another solution could be to put a time limit on a poster's ability to both delete or edit her or his own post. This too has merit. The downside, however, especially for a writer working in a worshop setting, is that typos and grammar errors not caught in time get set in cyber-stone. (Oh, the shame and embarrassment of it all.)
Possibly the conversation is over and the issue settled. I see the last post dates back to Sept. But I would like to see members on my board have complete ownership of their posts. Abuses of the tool, it seems to me, can be dealt with case by case.
(for what it is worth)

Re: Being able to delete ones own posts
Hi Terreson,
Thank you for your input, which you have obviously put some thought into, and have stated quite eloquently.
quote: Another solution could be to put a time limit on a poster's ability to both delete or edit her or his own post. This too has merit.
I don't know if I've said this here yet, but I agree with this, along with not letting someone edit after it has been responded to.
quote: The downside, however, especially for a writer working in a worshop setting, is that typos and grammar errors not caught in time get set in cyber-stone. (Oh, the shame and embarrassment of it all.)
For this reason, I think it would be good if each board's owner/admins could switch this feature on or off.

Re: Being able to delete ones own posts
Thanks, Lesinger girl, for the comment. At this late date in the exchange I figured the probability high I was committing the gravest of sins, of worrying gnats off a dead horse.
What you say makes sense. Or of allowing every board the tool whereby members can delete their own posts. Some boards would activate it, right? And some not. But at least the capability would be there. The limitations you suggest to tool's use also make sense.
Having said as much, that a member can edit her or his post to a simple asterisk or signature might solve the issue in the simplest way. It is enough to give a poster, who in the case of my board are mostly poets, control over text. Maybe this is the right way to go after all. At the very least I can assure my members they already got the technology at their fingertips.
Did I forget to say what a persnickity lot we poets can be when it comes to words?

Re: Being able to delete ones own posts
Probably about as persnickety as I can be when it comes to code, but then we kind of have to be that way if we want it to work. With poetry, a word can make or break the mood, so it helps to pay attention to such details.
You're very welcome, Terreson. Feel free to resurrect any feature request thread you'd like, whether it's to offer a fresh perspective or just to put your 'vote' in for it.
And yes, for now, members can edit their posts down to an asterisk or such, and a mod could later come along and delete it if you wish.
Happy New Year, Terreson.

Re:
Way late in this discussion, but what's new?
I think AT PRESENT posters can delete their posts, unless the moderator catches the activity and quotes the original message.
I do not like the poster to be able to delete their own posts, or at least not after the post has remained for a specific period, such as xx min.
If the post was made to the wrong forum, surely they will quickly realize.
We have had false information posted, and if I had not caught the forum post, we could not have determined whether the poster was in jail, family members in Texas, or family from FL.
A pedophile's family pretended to be the convicted pedophile and posting from the jail to scare his victims into believing they could not hide from him. With a previous case of alleged sexual abuse (sxab) of 12 year-old step daughter Administratively Closed by CPS, Ronnie Cummings became braver with his second step-child. Advertising himself molesting the second step-daughter, he took a plea.
He is sentenced to 40 years, via a plea, in Waxahachie Texas.
Law officials needed to see what was posted and nail the IP address terrifying victims.

Re: Being able to delete ones own posts
Hi Hope,
Do you really mean "edit out" when you say delete? Everyone can edit their own posts (in which case the IP, username, time, etc. are still there), but only mods and admins can delete a post entirely.
