Because I didn't see anything in the announcements about Graphical Ads. Just Google ones.

Because if there were no plans for Graphical Ads then perhaps there is a serious problem.
Move it to another forum then...

Graphic ads are served when Google is unable to target a page and is unable to serve a relevant ad to it. Only maybe 5% of ads aren't Google's.

To improve the ability of Google to serve text ads to your pages/boards, having a good, relevant descriptions and keywords (see control panel) can help.

Ok thank you. It's a password protected forum so I never thought to do that.

A password protected forum (or by other means private) means that Google will never be able to rely on your forum's content to serve ads.

This is when description/keywords are most important. They are shown to Google and Google will make its decision based on almost only them .

Re: I'm getting Graphical Ads.

Also it should be pointed out that

1. Google spiders a page shortly after it's created (i.e. a new topic is posted), and then MIGHT respider it again at some point - or not. So changing the content of the page (or board keywords/description) might only affect future topics posted on your board.

2. Google is quirky. They release almost no details on how their search engine or ad engine work, to prevent fraud, so it's mainly guessing and experimenting.
