[Fixed] member application problems

thor, i set my board default security settings to free to read but application for posting.

I created a local user to experiment, tried to post, and got this reply:

Name Main Lobby
Sorry, this board/forum does not require an application submission .

I changed the security settings for "Main Lobby" from board default to application for posting.

Then it worked, the application was sent.

PROBLEM 1: seems the security settings for each forum are not reading the boad default setting and have to be adjusted individually. Or is this not a bug and it's been set up so that local users have to apply to each forum separately...?

Another possible bug, after I approve the application, it still does not let the local user post. asks for an application submission. When I submit again as the local user, it says I'm already a member.

PROBLEM 2: can't post even after becoming a member.

I'm sure this problem can be easily fixed by adding the local member manually, but I'd rather not have to do this for every local member.

I am trying to grasp the concepts of local membership and forum-specific applications and so forth. Maybe you can clarify.

board: bmrmaroon

i've tried with a global user as well. does not work.

side question, thor, how does one sumbit a "global board application"? I can't see a way around it since in order to apply, you have to go into a forum to try to post, in which case it becomes a "forum-specific application."

oops forgot about the different servers

a board can be totally closed, can't even read without being a member.. so you have to apply for board

local users and global users are treated exactly the same.

only difference between the two types of users are that local users only work on a particular board.

I need more in-depth explanation of your problem.

From what I've seen on your board, the whole board requires membership thru application to post.

and a particular forum has its own membership thru application requirement.

is it what you wanted?

Yes to the first part, but no to the second. I did not want a separate forum membership.

What I want is all forums to be on the same security level - application to post.

I set up the global board-wide access settings that way (everyone can READ, apply to POST). Then I left all the forums to the original setting: BOARD'S DEFAULT.

But when I tried to apply with a made-up user (for experimentation), it said:

Name Main Lobby
Sorry, this board/forum does not require an application submission.

Same for all the other forums.

To experiment, I adjusted the security settings for "Main Lobby" (it used to be BOARD'S DEFAULT, I changed it manually - everyone READ, APPLY to post), and when I did this, the application went through.

Still with me? Geez, this is hard to describe.

Still not through though. Even after the application was approved, I couldn't post. When I tried, the board directed me to the application page. I submitted again, and it told me I'm already a member.

And so, I'm stuck!

(Well, I can manually enter the user name, but I don't want to have to do that since the settings are APPLICATION and not INVITE)

p.s. - changed the thread title, problem persists with both local and global users.

i think its a problem as i tried to do the same with global properties but using password to gain membership. when i set each one to local properties it worked fine. i think then it is a bug in the global properties assignment across a board. look for my thread i posted in Q & A under the username ferraangel, and see what i mean.

I hate to ask for more help, but please, Mrmaroon, can you give me the exact way to reproduce the bug? Step by step, what to do, to see the bug happen. Thank you, this would help a real lot, as I would go directly and correct the bug in 10 minutes, instead of spending 2 hours trying to reproduce it first.

Re: member application problems

anything to help you save time, thor.

Ok lets start with the default settings - everything OPEN to read and post. All access settings for all forums are at "Board's Default."

1) I adjust the Global board-wide access settings:

Read Access stays the same at "Everyone"

Write access: "Everyone" -> "Require Membership"

Membership method: "Posting one message gives membership" -> "Submit an application"

Forum settings are all left alone to "Board's Default"

2) Using a different user, I go into the forum "Main Lobby" and try to post. I get the application submission page. I submit an application. It tells me:

Name Main Lobby
Sorry, this board/forum does not require an application submission.

3) I fine-tune "Main Lobby":

Read Access stays at "Board's Default"

Write access: "Board's Default" -> "Require Membership"

Membership method: "Board's Default" -> "Submit an application"

4) Using the different user again, I go into "Main Lobby" and try to post. I get the application submission page. I submit an application. And this time it goes through.

5) As the admin, I approve the application.

6) As the user, I go into "Main Lobby" and try to post, and yet again, I am directed to the application submission page. I apply again and it tells me I'm already a member. And I'm stuck until I manually enter the user.

That's it. I think ferraangel is having the same basic problems with the password membership system.

My phone service may get cut off tomorrow because I am moving next week. So if you don't get any responses to more questions, you'll know why and I'll get back to you in 2 or 3 weeks.
