Custom Language Character Count

Not one but three different character count services (including Twitter) tell me this code is 185 characters, but Runboard tells me I have exceeded the 200 character limit for this code:<a href='https://rb.lesigns.com/fbp'><img src='https://rbbt.net/f.png' title='FB' alt='FB' /></a> <a href='%1'><img src='https://rbbt.net/s.png' title='Search' alt='Search' /></a>&nbsp;
All I want to do is make my CLS links HTTPS compliant for goodness sake!

This character miscounting is a bug that needs fixing.

PS: The shortest URL I know how to create saves me just three characters to the above code and I lose all sense of identity when it comes to Lesigner Girls 3rd party URL (https://t2m.io/HbVaG61L).

That's not mine. emoticon

The limit is actually 200 bytes, not 200 characters. You can fit 200 characters in there if they're all letters, numbers, and spaces, but quotes are two bytes each. Since you have 185 characters, and 16 of those characters are quotes, this makes 201 bytes, which is one byte over the limit.

But here's the good news: You don't need to start your URLs with https or http. If you leave that part out, it will automatically match whatever kind of connection you're already using.

Use this instead:

<a href='//rb.lesigns.com/fbp'><img src='//rbbt.net/f.png' title='FB' alt='FB' /></a> <a href='%1'><img src='//rbbt.net/s.png' title='Search' alt='Search' /></a>

Re: Custom Language Character Count

Thank you for the explanation LG. IMHO this 200 bytes limit needs a moderate increase in size. Under the current implementation, we are continually having to do work at getting things down to the specified threshold when using English. Under the Unicode standards, the character limit is cut almost in half for those using the Greek, Hebrew, or Arabic language (100 characters) and should a user be from an Asian culture such as China, Japan, or Korea the limit translates to only 50 characters!

As long as UTF-8 Unicode defines the limit (as opposed to character count) any increase in size should be a number divisible by four and should, ideally speaking, come closer to matching the numbers provided by a character counter. My suggestion would be to add 28 to the number limit since modern English has 14 punctuation marks. If all of those punctuation marks require 2 bytes, it is possible for a CLS entry to be 173 characters in length and fail to pass the 200-byte Runboard limitation test. A limit of 228 bytes would say the correlation between bytes and characters is much closer to what the average, non-coder, would expect to see. Then to clarify the CLS "200" statement, you could change "200" to read "approximately 200 English characters."

Note: The URL: https://t2m.io/HbVaG61L is a tiny URL of 23 bytes and equates to the URL https://rb.lesigns.com/fbp which is 26 bytes in length.

You're welcome, Rick. emoticon

Those sound like reasonable suggestions. If nothing else, a better explanation could also help. I'm not even certain if this statement on the CLS page is accurate since UTF characters can go up to 4 bytes.

quote:

Languages such (as) japanese or russian (Unicode ones) will have every character count for TWO.

Note: The URL: https://t2m.io/HbVaG61L is a tiny URL of 23 bytes and equates to the URL https://rb.lesigns.com/fbp which is 26 bytes in length.

You could knock it down to 12 bytes if you use rbbt to create your own tiny urls and leave off the https. Of course, you would have to start using 13 characters before long. emoticon
