I've seen some of those before, and wish we had some around here. I can't tell you how many dead deer and other animals I see on and near the road this time of year.

There's a wildlife bridge across a road where I grew up. They built it to help wildcats (there is a species of truly wild cats in Europe, not to be confused with feral house cats) regain territory.

Builders got seriously mocked for the expense, but I'm glad. It's certainly become a very busy road by now.

Yeah. I still remember the time we came up on a hit deer trying to get up and run away, but couldn't. Thankfully a guy with a rifle pulled up to put it down. We passed by before getting to see the action ... which I'm grateful for.

Not only can these crossings protect wildlife, but they can also prevent human injuries and deaths from hitting or swerving to miss large animals.

My mole tunnel is nothing, compared to these wildlife passages. No moles are harmed when they mess up our walkway, and we know where to be careful when the moles mess it up.

I have a cousin who would have been killed if the deer's antler hadn't got caught in the hood of the car. Those points were coming straight for her.

Yes, many forget that those bridges protect people, too.

The one I know has fence stretching for a mile or two (along the forested areas) to guide the animals onto the bridge.

Unfortunately, it seems that mountain bikers are also using it, which does defy its purpose somewhat.

LG: Yes, it was scary. It was years ago, so I can't quite remember all the details, but IIRC, she was pregnant at the time. Though I could be wrong.

F: Yeah. Human activity could keep the animals from using it. Sadly some just don't care about anyone but themselves.

I think I read last night that some places fine people for using these bridges. I don't know how you would catch mountain bikers without having a live person keep watch, though.

They have critter cams on the bridges to see which animals use them.

Mountain bikes are quite distinct but don't carry registrations... emoticon
