Electrical issues

My 64 12 volt beetle seems to jump time. I set the timing and Bug starts. Start down the street and the lights go dim. Pull in driveway and turn off, turn key it is dead. Reset timing and it starts. Take if down street and happens all over again.

Hi jgianop! Welcome to Runboard. If you are looking for Australian X-Trail, Jox has given you good advice on how to join that board. If you are not looking for Australian X-Trail, let us know and we will try to figure out what board you want. There are thousands of boards on Runboard, but we can usually figure it out.

Hi jgianop,

When you say "volt beetle", I assume you're referring to a Volkswagon. If so, there are multiple message boards on Runboard where Volkswagons are mentioned, and I have no idea which one you were looking for. Was it one of the following boards?

Post War Classics
Sussex VW Owners Club
Airheads VW forum

If you can give us the name of the board or describe what it looks like, we can try to help you find it. The more information you can give us, the better we can help.

If the lights go dim as you are driving, then you either have a dangling short circuit wire that is sparking, or your regulator, alternator, or generator is bad.

Timing can not make the lights go dim unless you mean the engine is dying so no longer turns the generator?
If the key is dead when you turn it off and on again, then the battery is seriously low, or there is a loose/corroded battery connection.

The timing can't do these things.
But you are resetting it?
Is it off?
Does it need to be reset?
If so, then there has to be something changing the timing, and the most common culprit of changing timing, is a sticky distributor advance plate. The vacuum or centrifugal advance needs to be able to move the breaker plate the points are on, but it also has to snap back when the advance is to turn off at lower rpm. But I suppose not having enough point gap could also make it erratic.

However, I suspect letting the car sit for a minute or 2 while you fiddle with the points, allows the battery to recharge a bit, and it has nothing to do with the points really.

He was not saying "volt beetle", but that he has a 1964 beetle that was originally 6 volt electrical system, but had been converted to a 12 volt electrical system.

All cars used to be 6 volt in the old days because they did not know how to make batterys small or inexpensive as they do now.
But high voltage starts better, can tolerate corrosion better, and don't need as thick of wires.

Thank you for your input, Rigby! I hope jgianop will see this, since this is the only post they made on Runboard.

On a side note, I just looked at the bio in your profile and I see you are a physicist and programmer. It's no wonder you seem to understand the inner workings of cars so well. emoticon

I read Rigby post last week and was thinking, "It sure is nice to have an expert around here..especially for folks like jgianop who seemed to really need the help, but was in the wrong place!
So if Rigby comes back...Thank you. emoticon

I realize it was the wrong place, but it seemed sort of an emergency. Hate to think of people being at the mercy of dealerships that only really want to sell new cars. I can also answer plumbing, heating, AC, framing, programming, or other topics as well.

I appreciate it, Rigby! Yes, this was the wrong place for them to post their questions, but I'm glad you came along and answered them anyway. I just hope they came back and saw it, or otherwise fixed their issue without breaking the bank.

What programming language(s) are you fluent in? I'm not really a programmer, as my strengths are in markup and styling, but I have dabbled a little in javascript and php. For example, I made the quick reply and "Jump to page" you see here and at some other boards.

I dabble in a lot of different things, too, but I'm only an expert in some, and I can't imagine anyone coming here to ask about changing a light switch or outlet, building something with wood or plexiglass, sculpting with cement or clay, carving, creating prosthetics for a costume, assembling Ikea furniture.. You know, oddball stuff. emoticon
