Excellent advice, Queeny. I love how your son handled that, and I bet the way you raised him had a lot to do with that.

Maybe the logical, how to handle a situation part.
But the rest....that kid was smarter than me by the 4th grade. By the 5th grade I could no longer help him with his Math..

I was the kid who was sitting up at midnight, trying to understand my math homework. I just never came to me... emoticon

BRIAN...I also told my son, that those annoying things that seem unfair, are all on the "teacher". Means they are having issues of some kind. Either in their career or life. And they bring that anger to work.
Like my kid always said...."I just do the best I can, and tell myself...just get through the school year, one day these people won't matter....as I will be long gone." emoticon

Re: School Report

One time when I was in 1st grade, my teacher used a ping pong paddle to beat a student on the behind in front of the whole class. I don't remember why, but I remember thinking it was really extreme for whatever it was he did, or whatever she might have believed he did. That moment is still etched in my memory, and it's the only memory I have of that teacher. Not only was I afraid to sneeze without permission in her class after that, but I even had nightmares about her a year or two later.

Yeah, she had issues.

You know, if she were a math teacher you could say she had problems emoticon

But really, wow! emoticon My teachers couldn't do 1% of that to a seventh-grader without getting arrested!

Mrs. Logan can be tough but she wouldn't physically hurt anyone - possibly mentally emoticon

That's a good way to look at it Queeny! They are the ones who are stuck with themselves their entire life. Poor them emoticon

Good one! emoticon

This was in 1978 or 1979, before it was illegal. If it were to happen these days, I'm sure it would be all over the news and the teacher would be thrown in jail.

Some people don't understand how much mental anguish they are causing others. My 1st grade teacher might have believed she was disciplining the student, but if I remember that moment so vividly and had nightmares about her well over a year after having her as a teacher, I can't imagine how mentally scarred that child must have been by that experience.

Even if a teacher (or parent, or spouse) isn't physically abusive, they can be mentally abusive without realizing it. I know people whose parents called them stupid, and they grew up to believe it. Don't let your math teacher get to you. You're a smart guy, whether she realizes it or not. It takes brilliance to recognize brilliance, and maybe she just isn't brilliant enough to recognize yours.

I agree.

I wish I could say that you won't ever have to deal with people like that once you leave school and enter the work force, but you will probably have bosses who don't recognize your brilliance. I've had a few like that, but I've also had a few who appreciate my skills, including my current employer. I've been with them less than two months, but feel that I can advance there very quickly because they recognize what I can do. Coincidentally, I work in the finance department, which involves a lot of math. emoticon

I wouldn't say I'm brilliant at all but thank you!

Are you an accountant? My dad is.

Whenever the ball broke off of a "socko-paddle," Dad saved the paddle and used them to spank my sister and me. Back then the paddles were thick, and didn't break so easily.

He also liked to get thin tree limbs and strip the brown layer off and used it to spank us. And also leather straps. He'd dig out holes so that it would sting worse.

He'd tell us that this was going to hurt him worse than it was going to hurt us, and that he did it because he loved us. Or he'd make us say it.

I think it was when I stopped crying that he stopped spanking me. He tried several times to make me cry, but I wouldn't give him the pleasure. I guess he realized it wasn't going to work anymore. (And it hurt like a mother... too. But I was just too stubborn to give in.)

I'm really sorry Joxcenia emoticon

I don't think kids should be hurt and I'm sure you were not a criminal or something so you didn't deserve that!

Oh, Jox! *sending a bunch of hugs*

No kid should go through that. And I don't believe that BS about love and hurting him - this was a nasty power game, and you won it eventually.

Hugs, Jox. Using a belt out of anger is abusive, but what your dad did was far worse. No person should ever have to go through that, especially a child. emoticon I agree with Firle, it sounds like a power game, and I'm glad you won it eventually.

Brian, I'm not an accountant, but I do handle a lot of money and have to file reports.

Oh. Cool emoticon

Math is just the kind of class you want a good teacher it because they will be asked lots of questions. But then that could be why both my math teachers so far are so grumpy anyway! emoticon

Today on the class worksheet she told me some wrong info. so I just asked if that was actually right (it didn't look right to me so I wanted to confirm) and she scolded me like "I've been teaching math for 10 (or however many, I forget exactly) years. I know what I'm doing" and then she realized I was correct ( emoticon ) but she was not exactly willing to admit it but she did briskly apologize at least. But as I said earlier I don't mind people making mistakes, I mind them being too reluctant to admit them emoticon
