Online Post Notification?

I know this will take programming but wouldn't it be cool if the navigation bar included a "new post" notification to a user based on their "friends list?"

Clicking on the "new posts" link would give the user a list of which friends made the posting and if the user clicked on their friend then Runboard would take them to the post (if the post was public) or to the board where their friend is at if the post was in a private forum.

It would make it a bit more like FB. Maybe that is a good idea.

I wasn't thinking about FB when I had this idea but now that you mention it...

My thought was that this could be an aid for new users who seem to get lost and cannot find where their friends are posting at here at Runboard.

This gives users a way of helping each other find their way without having to depend on the Runboard staff sending PM's to their friends to tell them how to find their other friends who are already posting somewhere in the Runboard communities.

We do notify friends when someone posts in their own live feed, which is a bit like FB, but I don't think they notify you if a friend posts in a group unless you're part of that group, do they?

I have seen people friend others they have found through the global chat room, and think I remember someone from a wrestling board friending someone who was trying to join a support group.

Your idea sounds interesting, but it might need some honing. I'm just not sure how.

My idea for everything: make it a setting in your control panel.

Possibly this setting could be per board?

If it's an open board, I'd think that any post a friend makes there would show up in the feed. If it's a private board, it would only show up if the friend is also a member of that same board.

Correct, PR?

I know, but if the board is open to the public, would an admin of that board want to keep it from showing in people's live feeds?

Yes, only posts that would be visible to the user would show up as a "new post." Otherwise the RB staff would start getting support requests saying the "new post" feature was broken.

It could be similar to the inbox notification for prime members. If there are new posts, a number could appear in the top bar, and a foldout menu could offer the links.

Does that make any sense? (Yes, it's very much like FB.)

And of course, this feature could be a perfect prime feature.
