Anyone Have Some Fresh Ideas for Board Design?

Is there any more recent -- or fresh -- ideas people have for redesigning a board to make it more appealing?

I have a moderator who says the marque at the top of the board and the sidebar both look "outdated". The sidebar I thought was an excellent addition to the board. Perhaps, someone has ideas for making a better sidebar.

I hope to do something different and still have all the links provided in the sidebar available for easy access.

The marque he mentions was just something I did when I became the admin to draw the visitor's attention to the fact that some things had changed. Some members visit very seldom, so I thought it good to keep the marque going for quite some time.

The board in question is Warhammer Quest.

Hi OldWarrior. emoticon

The only problem with sidebars these days is when someone views it with a small mobile device, but that's not the only problem on mobiles. See: responsive design

I've never liked reading marquees, because they often move too fast or too slow, and everyone reads at a different pace. Maybe you could have it change colors instead. See: CSS animation

The sidebar can be designed in a multitude of different ways. For example, I created a "drop down" sidebar for the Mystery Skin which groups links under their main subject title and then Lesigner Girl created a nice sidebar for the Winter skin which uses a "daily pic" and "tomorrows pic" feature.

Both of those are different from the perceived "normal sidebar."

I have in my "fun project challenge" list an idea that would make the sidebar the main display for mobile devices but I have not found time to actually do any work on it this year.

So it all depends on what you want to do. If you can describe it, or provide a picture mock-up of what you would like to see in the "Skins Discussions" forum then we could begin talking about how to code it...

Well, mobile devices... I am glad you mentioned that, because I have only been thinking of them in terms of a gaming site in which I am involved.

The marque I use has the option that stops the text movement by hovering over it. The changing color idea sounds really cool. I might try that out.

Both of these sidebar ideas seem to have serious merit for what I am dealing with. So, I shall check into them.

By the way, the whole issue of things looking "outdated" was brought on by someone comparing our message board with another Warhammer Quest fan site which has a professional web designer behind it. If anyone here wants to see what we are competing with (by competing I mean in the way of graphic appeal -- and some of our members are spending more time over there too) check out this site: Beyond the Gray Mountains.

Just a small correction: Skokey designed the seasonal skins, and I coded them.

I just had a thought. What about something like this for the menu?

Old Warrior, Beyond the Gray Mountains is a nice-looking site. I like how they used parallax at the top, although that isn't something that can be done without javascript. Even so, it a static header that looks like that would be nice, too.

Speaking of projects, I'd better get back outside now.

Edit to add: You could have a picture for the page background, and have everything except that picture scroll when you scroll the page.

Thanks for the info and tips.

We really do not need to fully compete with that other really nice site, but I do plan to make some upgrades and freshen things up a bit. emoticon I have made several changes in response to the current complaint(s). More to go.

Here is the post where I mention the changes: Changes Made to this Board's Design & Future Plans .

That site appears to be a basic two column layout with header and footer. I could come close to duplicating that on Runboard but that would be plagiarizing (from the look of it, even if the coding would be totally different). Much better would be a modular design that is easily adjusted with some HTML and CSS coding to fit multiple platforms. LG is much better than I am on the last bit which is why I have it listed as a "design challenge" on my fun to do list.

You could start with a generic "default background pic" and get the coding sides worked out. Then step up to a rotating series of background pics that would appear depending on where the user was and what device they were using.

The pathway is pretty straight forward but if I was doing it I bet I would need LG's assistance at some point. Still... That site did give me a couple of ideas to try when time permits.
