All images hosted are LOST suddenly!

I've been using Imagevenue to host images for my forum with runboard for over 5 years now at least and all along there has been no problem. Today all in a sudden, and without any previous notices or warnings, all my images don't show up anymore but instead are re-directed to this post:

saying Imagevenue is not supported by runboard.

This means all my past years of work with runboard is literally lost and ruined, just like that!

Can anyone hint or help? Much appreciated.

Re: All images hosted are LOST suddenly!

Thanks, Erika.

Hi steandric,

We have disallowed links to imagevenue ever since June 2010, when we first discovered they were serving porn ads. Pastor Rick posted it #post262333]here, and at that time, I personally notified board owners where we found links to imagevenue and the other problem hosts we were aware of at the time. Since then, I had contacted so many board owners over so many violations, our only choices were to either (1) suspend every board where those violations were found until they could clean up those violations, (2) disable images from those hosts completely, or (3) put those link redirects in place, while still showing the embedded images. We chose the last option, because it causes the least amount of disruption.

I didn't realize you were using imagevenue at your board until your complaint, otherwise I would have contacted you directly as soon as I found out, just as I had contacted the others.

I know imagevenue supposedly has a family-safe option when uploading pictures, so I checked to see if any of your links would show adult ads. When I did, I got a popup advertising "Jasmine Live Sex Cam." There was a video of a woman in her bra and panties, and there were links down the side that said the following:

quote:

Teen girl cams
Blonde girl cams
Big t**s girl cams
Latina girl cams
Ebony girl cams
Asian girl cams
Mature cams
Lesbian cams
Couple cams
Group cams

I censored out one of the words above, because it is inappropriate for this board. Not only is linking to a page that displays those ads a violation of our TOS, but unless those 'teens' are 18 or 19, that first link is also illegal.

Runboard Staff cannot personally oversee every post made by every member on every board. Because there were so many of these violations on several different boards, we finally put this redirect in place about a month ago.

If you have a good popup blocker, then there's a good chance you didn't realize what kinds of ads your image host serves, and you probably wouldn't have been using them if you had known. However, it is the responsibility of every member to make sure what they're posting is allowed by our TOS, and it is the responsibility of every board owner to make sure nothing that violates our TOS is posted on their board.

I do empathize with your situation, but we can't allow those links. I understand it would be a lot of work to upload all your existing images to a different host and edit your past posts to link to the new hosts, but unfortunately, that's the only way you can have those thumbnails open to larger images.

The images you have at your board are appropriate for all ages, and should be perfectly acceptable for any image host. Photobucket and tinypic are quite popular, and there are many others you can use. You don't have to limit yourself to the ones that are listed #post66573]here, but you do need to make sure that whatever host you choose won't violate our TOS like imagevenue does. The list PR started only shows the ones we're aware of, but if we find other hosts that violate our TOS, we will be adding them to that list, as well as redirecting their links like we have with the others.

I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer, and hope you understand why we needed to do this.

Edit to add: If you can't readily find your full-sized images to upload them elsewhere, just click on 'Quote' or 'Edit' for the post at your board, and you'll find the link to the full-sized image inside the [url=...] tag.

Re:

Are u suggesting me to re-upload over 10,000 images elsewhere and edit my thousands of posts one by one? Just let you know my board had been picked as one of your best boards many times in the past and it is disappointing if not an insult to know that this genuinely clean and awarded board of mine is now all in a sudden punished & literally destroyed for using, innocently, a host with ads that I am neither responsible for nor have any knowledge of. How fair and empathizing can that be?

Re: All images hosted are LOST suddenly!

I never said it was fair, steandric.

It's not fair to you that Imagevenue's practice of serving porn ads has forced us to disallow links to their site.

It's not fair to us that Imagevenue doesn't warn people up front about their porn-serving practices, so we wouldn't have to upset innocent people who didn't realize their links were violating our TOS.

It would be even less fair to you, to us, and to all of our members, if we had to shut all of Runboard down because of those Imagevenue links, which is exactly what could happen when there were probably millions of links to porn on our site, when you count the other boards that were using Imagevenue.

If Imagevenue would stop serving porn ads, we could remove that redirect, but since porn seems to be the only thing they advertise there, I really don't expect them to do that any time soon.

I do empathize with your situation. I just don't see any way for us to change it. emoticon

Re:

Sorry it is not fair to me at all because since June 2010 neither you nor your staff had ever contacted me about Imagevenue as you claimed, and this you have admitted. I started using Runboard and Imagevenue as host in May, 2006, ie. 5 months before you first found out about Imagevenue. So is it fair for this 5 months' work of mine, just to speak?

Hi steandric,

The reason I started the list was to try and minimize the impact on all boards since it was impractical for me (and I can only speak for myself) to try and contact over 5,000 message boards to warn them about something they might not even be using. I am sorry if you thought I said I contacted you about this, I didn't, I just started keeping a list over here in a publicly viewable forum. If you want my help in fixing the broken image links I will do what I can but I have to have edit access to all posts to do so (that means you would have to trust me enough to make me at least a moderator on your board). My first semi-free day is February 5, 2014 and that is only for 4-5 hours. The host I would use is [sign in to see URL] which refers to the url size not the picture size. Let me know soon if this would be of help to you as my schedule changes almost daily...

Rick, that's a generous offer. Thank you. emoticon

Steandric, I don't know why you believe any of us claimed we had contacted you personally, and saying we didn't isn't an "admission." I was merely explaining why we had not. Your frustration is completely understandable, though, and it's natural for anyone's perception to be clouded when emotions are running high. Once the shock has worn off, I hope you will better understand why it was necessary to put those redirects in place, and forgive us for not considering back in 2010 that your nice board with such classy images could even possibly be violating the TOS. I honestly would not have expected to find such a thing there, which is a credit to you and the quality of the content you post.

I can't promise that I'll have time to do much, but if I do find some time to re-upload some of your images and edit the links, do I have your consent to do so? I would like to help, if I can.

Re:

I'm not sure how much work there is as my board is now almost 8 years old with over at least a thousand of posts, and most of the images are of High Quality ie. minimum 1000x1500 pixels.

My consent is hereby given to any help to have the image links fixed.

Thanks for you understanding, steandric.

I'll see what I can do, and I know PR will, too. I already have the ability to edit posts at your board, but PR won't be able to do that unless he is given moderator powers or higher at your board.
