The Ability to Create, Save, and Switch Between Muliple Themes Per Board

It would be nice if board owners/admins had the ability to create & save multiple themes so that they could switch between them without having to edit the colors/CSS/HTML every time. It might mean for the "board theme / layout" and the "layout / colors of your board" sections to be connected somehow.

This would make switching between the normal theme and holiday themes a snap.

I agree that it would be great to be able to create and store multiple layouts and switch between them easily. emoticon

It would also be cool if members could use the theme they like best if they wanted to. Maybe let owners/admins put a few in the member's option section? That way they could omit the holiday themes from the list, and only the owners/admins could switch to a holiday theme.

If an admin selects a holiday skin, would it override the member's choice?

I personally think that whatever the admin chooses for the board is what the people should see. I have been at other message board systems where you can choose what skin to look at and it loses how personal the board is when the admin decorates it.

I would not be for having members be able to switch out what I have chosen.

Skins chosen as Holiday would over ride the users choice but if it wasn't a Holiday theme then let the users choice show up. In the list of choices have the board owners desired choice bolded so it lets the user know what the current planned theme is...

I would really not like that. How my board looks is my personality. The owner should choose whether or not the members have the option.

Susa, if we went with this suggestion, that wouldn't be an issue, because you would have to create or import a skin before anyone could select it, and since you (as the board owner) would be choosing which ones are user-selectable, you could opt to not make any of them selectable.

I can see some pros and cons to this idea. One con: Imagine all the database bloat that could potentially result. If 1000 people were members of 10 boards each and set a preference for all of them, that would be 10000 extra preferences to store. I won't get into the other cons, because a lot of that will depend on the overhauls we have planned for boards in the future. On that note, board control panels will also be changing, and the layout/colors and headers/footers sections won't exist in the forms that we are currently familiar with.

The main pro to allowing user-selectable skins is that some people have difficulty reading dark text on a light background, while others have difficulty reading light text on a dark background. With this in mind, I wonder if it would be feasible to add a user option that simply asks for a light/dark or dark/light preference, and board owners/admins could choose the actual theme (everyday1, everyday2, Christmas, etc). If a board owner/admin only offers one skin, then the user just sees whatever is offered.

For holidays, the owner/admin could choose to create a light-on-dark version and a dark-on-light version, and everyone would automatically see the version that's specified in their preferences. But as with everyday skins, if the owner/admin only offers one skin for that holiday, then everyone would see that skin.

There could be a section of the control panel that looks something like this, where all the underlined text is a link:
Theme name Dark-on-light Light-on-dark

Default Edit Edit Current
Christmas Edit Edit Switch to current
Easter Edit Create or import Switch to current
Add another theme

Instead of allowing a user to choose a theme, per se, they only choose light/dark or dark/light and get that version of whatever the board owner/admin selects.

I don't know if I've explained this very well, I don't have all the details ironed out, and I don't even know if it would be feasible, but what are everyone's thoughts on this?

I have a additional thought. Holiday themes should revert back to the board owners default choice after 30 days. I see boards where the board owner has left right after Christmas and the board is active but still shows the Christmas theme (which will look okay in another couple of months)...

Re: The Ability to Create, Save, and Switch Between Muliple Themes Per Board

I can think of one board in particular that has been decorated for Christmas for quite a few years now. You probably know which one I'm thinking of.

It might be good to let admins set how many days they want a holiday theme to stay up, with the default being 30 days. emoticon

Remember, this is all hypothetical at this point. I still don't know if it's even feasible, but it's good to throw these ideas out there in case it is. emoticon
