Forum Viewing, Posting, & Replying Rights

I know I suggested this a few years ago on another board, but I thought I'd post it here, where it really belonged.

=========================

Use-net moderation works okay, but I'd still like to see these options as well when setting up the viewing/posting/replying rights to my forums:

Read access:

[_] Board's default
[_] Everyone
[_] Logged-in users
[*] Require membership

Write access:

----- Start Threads

[_] Board's default
[_] Logged-in users
[_] Require membership
[_] Admins & Mods Only
[_] Admins Only
[*] Head Admin Only

----- Reply To Threads

[_] Board's default
[_] Logged-in users
[*] Require membership
[_] Admins & Mods Only
[_] Admins Only
[_] Head Admin Only

Membership gaining method:

[*] Use board's memberlist
[_] Posting one message gives membership
[_] Enter password to gain membership
Password: [______________]
[_] Submit an application, administrator/owner approves
[_] Invite-only membership
[_] No membership can be gained

[_] Clear members:
[*] True (USENET-style) moderation (new topics only):

I was thinking last night that we should add security settings to the forum creation page, and I like your additional write access settings. emoticon

I can see these being a nice addition to the read access as well...

I figured the 'Require Membership' would keep any non-members out. But with those on the list, you wouldn't have to remember to add/remove usernames from the forum's member list whenever anyone was bumped to or removed from the Admn/Mod powers.

Good catch.

hmm . . . I was thinking of adding:

Read access:

[_] Board's default
[_] Everyone
[*] Logged-in users
[_] Require membership
[_] Admins & Mods Only
[_] Admins Only
[_] Head Admin Only

Write access:

----- Start Threads

[_] Board's default

[_] Admins & Mods Only
[_] Admins Only
[_] Head Admin Only

----- Reply To Threads

[_] Board's default
[*] Logged-in users
[_] Require membership
[_] Admins & Mods Only
[_] Admins Only
[_] Head Admin Only

Membership gaining method:

[_] Use board's memberlist
[_] Posting one message gives membership
[*] Posting a message/s does not give membership
[_] Enter password to gain membership
Password: [______________]
[_] Submit an application, administrator/owner approves
[_] Invite-only membership
[_] No membership can be gained

[_] Clear members:
[*] True (USENET-style) moderation (new topics only):

++++++++++++++++++++++

Or, perhaps:

Read access:

[_] Board's default
[_] Everyone
[*] Logged-in users
[_] Require membership
[_] Admins & Mods Only
[_] Admins Only
[_] Head Admin Only

Write access:

----- Start Threads

[_] Board's default
[*] Guests (Logged-in users - no membership required)
[_] Logged-in users
[_] Require membership
[_] Admins & Mods Only
[_] Admins Only
[_] Head Admin Only

----- Reply To Threads

[_] Board's default
[*] Guests (Logged-in users - no membership required)
[_] Logged-in users
[_] Require membership
[_] Admins & Mods Only
[_] Admins Only
[_] Head Admin Only

Membership gaining method:

[_] Use board's memberlist
[_] Posting one message gives membership
[*] Posting a message/s does not give membership

Want another option? How about a forum with a setting of:

Read Access

[_] Logged out (and logged in) users, Admins, and mods only.

Write Access

[_] Admins and mods only

Membership gaining method

[_] Only Admins and Mods have membership

Purpose: Provides potential members visiting a application based board a readable forum where the board and its rules are laid out thus providing a board advertisement opportunity for the board owner along with a chance for the visiting user who has not even created a Runboard account to see what they would be applying to join after creating a Runboard account.

Ok, now my head is spinning. emoticon

Jox,

For forums, I don't know why we currently have "everyone" as an option for read access, and "logged-in" as an option for write access, because (1) you can't set forum-specific security any lower than board-wide security, and (2) if it's the same as board-wide security, "board's default" already covers that.

quote:

[*] Posting a message/s does not give membership

"No membership can be gained" already covers that.

Rather than having a "Clear members" option where it currently is, I think I would rather move that so it's shown with the actual member list. The way it is right now, I think it's just too confusing for some people. On that note, the wording should probably be changed to, "Delete all members from this member list," or something along those lines.

As for allowing guests to post, Thor said no to this years ago, and I wholeheartedly agree with his position on that. Remember the kitchen spammer who made that post at one of your boards a couple of months ago? If we had allowed guest posting, I have no doubt you would have been inundated with so much kitchen spam and forced to disable that option anyway, and I would still be battling to keep him off our system. Think back to that troll you and I dealt with about 10 years ago and multiply it by 500, and that's probably about what it was like trying to get rid of this jerk, who is so brainless that he still tries to get in occasionally and fails miserably. Remove the registration requirement, and you could probably multiply that by 10,000 until we either went back to requiring registration, or I throw in the towel and let him drag Runboard down into a cesspool of spam.

A few months ago, I might have thought it worth considering that we allow guest posts under the condition that each one had to be approved by board staff before it went public, but now I'm convinced that even this wouldn't be sufficient.

I like the additional options for mods, admins, and head admin for read and write access.

Rick,

I don't understand what you mean by this. This seems to include the whole world, but then it ends with "only."

The following is just me thinking out loud...

Imagine this scenario. Let's say you have:

Board settings:
Read: Require membership
Write: Require membership
Membership: Application

Now let's say you have a members-only section consisting of a few different forums, and you want people to have membership to those forums before they can read them, but you only want to allow mods or higher to post in one of those forums. Not just new topics, but replies, too.

Forum settings:
Read: Require membership, because you don't want just any board member in.
Write: Mods or higher
Membership gaining method: Invite only, application, or password.

If mods can post in a forum, maybe it could give them automatic membership to that forum. If you end up banning a mod, this could automatically remove their access to read that forum, too. However, this doesn't account for the other private forums where any member of that forum can post, and where you would have to add mods to those member lists if you don't have the miscellaneous option enabled to allow mods access to all forums.

For that reason, and just so we don't have to add/remove mods from access to multiple forums (for example, a mods-only forum and a spam depository) when we give or take that power away from someone, I wonder if we could move the "Give mods access to all forums" option from the miscellaneous options to the forum security settings pages, so the option can be specific to each forum instead of board-wide.

I think I just made my own head spin even more now. emoticon

Re: Forum Viewing, Posting, & Replying Rights

The original idea was a read only forum that board members (except for admins and/or mods) would not see. All the forum would have in it would be a generalized FAQ about what the board is about and maybe some board rules that a member applicant would need to be familiar with in order to decide if they wished to apply for membership.

So if a board is "application based" this forum would show above the application box. Users (logged in or not) could read the information in that forum before deciding if they wanted to apply or not. Board Members, other than admins (and maybe mods) would not see this forum since they are already members of the board.

Does that help?

So it's visible until someone joins?

What if board members forget the rules and need to refer to them, or what if the rules are updated?
