Every board now has its own chat room
Yes, now you can choose between one-on-one friend chat, Runboard Community Chat, or a chat with the members at the board you are visiting.
Just like before, you need to first click on the "Chat" tab at the bottom right corner of your screen. If you pop in on Runboard during the daily backup and you don't already have the chat open in another tab, you can join Runboard Community Chat or one-on-one friend chat by clicking on the chat room link at the bottom of the daily maintenance page.
This image will show you how to join and leave the community chat rooms. Just follow the little hand in each screen cap as you read along.
Note: If you like to have multiple Runboard pages open at the same time in different browser tabs, chat will only show up in one of those pages at any given time. This is how it has always worked ever since we introduced the friend chat.
The reason I'm making a special point to mention this now, is because the chat feature will sometimes disappear from one page and reappear in another, if there is a hiccup in the internet anywhere between you and Runboard.
This didn't matter much before, but now if you are chatting with people at one board and decide to view another board in another browser tab, you may suddenly disappear from the chat you were in. If this happens, the easiest way to get it back is to close the 2nd tab, then refresh the page where you were chatting.

Board owners and admins: Security settings for chat
Board owners and admins: Security settings for chat
Board owners and admins have the ability to decide who can use their board's chat room.
For someone to have access to your board's chat room, they must meet three requirements:
1) They must be logged in to a Runboard account.
This one is pretty self-explanatory. If someone isn't logged into a Runboard account, they can't access any of Runboard's chat features.
2) They must be able to see your board's forum list.
This is based on your board's security settings. In your advanced security settings, if you have "Read access" set to "Everyone" or "Logged-in users," then anyone who meets the 1st requirement will automatically meet the 2nd requirement.
If your board's security is set so only board members can read it, then someone must be a member of your board in order to meet the 2nd requirement.
If your board's security is set so only board members can post, but non-members can still read it, then this will not exclude non-members from participating in your chat room. However, you can still exclude non-members (and even some of your members) under the third requirement:
3) Their user level must be the same as, or higher than, the level you set for your board's chat room.
There is a new setting under Security management > Advanced security settings of your board's control panel.
Just before the "Change security preferences" button, you'll see this:
quote: Minimum level for chatroom access: [ 1 ]
This number pertains to the user levels you set at your board under Security settings > Manage user levels and custom titles > Define user levels / custom titles, plus some default levels that you won't see listed there.
These are the default levels:
0 = Anyone who is banned at your board, whether they're a member or not.
1 = Any logged-in Runboard user who is not a member of your board.
3 = Board member
998 = Board Moderators
999 = Board Admins
1000 = Board Owner
The default minimum level for chatroom access is 1.
If you have an openly-viewable board but only want to allow your members to chat, then you should change this number to 3.
If you only want board mods and admins to access your chat, you should change the minimum level for chat access to 998, which is the level for board mods.
If, for example, you want to allow long-standing members access, but don't want new members to access your chat, you can enter one of the custom levels that you define under Security settings > Manage user levels and custom titles > Define user levels / custom titles, and anyone who has that level or higher will be able to use your chat room. This level can be one that is reached automatically with a certain number of posts, or a level that you grant to individuals manually.
I hope this explanation is clear. If you want to restrict chat access to anyone and you aren't sure if your settings are correct, don't forget that you can create a test account if you don't already have one, and use that to test things out. If you're still not sure, you can let me know what you want to accomplish, and I'll take a look at your settings.

Re: Every board now has its own chat room
Thanks for the report, Erika.
It took me a few tries to post something to chat with an iPhone just now, but it finally worked (in Safari), and now it's working every time after that. When it didn't work the first few times, I sent a friend chat message, which was successful on the first try.
Mini-Opera on iPhone is even more worthless than IE for Windows, so it's no surprise it won't even open in that browser.
I'm guessing you would have similar results on an iPad that I had on the iPhone. Does the iPad have a 'Return' button?

Re:
Yes it has a return button. But nothing comes up where you can write it on the chat. It's also safari.

Re: Every board now has its own chat room
Nothing happens when you tap on the text box? Or are you saying there's no text box to tap on?

Re: Every board now has its own chat room
It sounds like you were doing it right, then. Did you try it a few times? For some reason, I had to try it a few times on my iPhone before it would start working.
