Unable to post and enter board.

Hi, I have just learned that two of my members have been unable to reply post on a couple of forums on my board. One of those members cannot now get into the board at all.
Would someone be able to fix the problem please.

Thank you,

Jess

Re:

It sounds like a security setting issue with the forums but I cannot look at that side so we will have to wait on a global admin to confirm it. One should be coming by shortly to get the matter sorted out.

PR is right. This is an issue with your security settings. I didn't check all of your forums, but your 7th forum has an impossible security setup. It requires membership to that particular forum to post, but people have to post in that forum in order to have membership to it. With these settings, the only way for anyone to post in that forum is if you add them to that forum's member list manually.

You should check the settings for each of your forums, and make sure all the appropriate ones are set to "board's default" and "board's memberlist".

Important note! If you do set a forum to use the board's member list, you need to "clear members" for that particular forum. Otherwise, you'll have a hidden member list for that forum, and if you ever want to remove their membership, you'll have a heck of a time finding them there. Do not accidentally clear the board's member list, otherwise you'll need to re-add everyone.

Have they ever gotten into your board at all in the past? If not, are you sure they have an account? If they've gotten in before, it sounds like a login problem.

If these questions don't help, then please let me know the exact screen name of this member.

Thanks LG. I am not aware that I have changed entry into any of the forums recently but I'll check them out.

The member having a problem getting into the board has been in many times. I advised him to send for his password which he did but that isn't working for him at all.

You're welcome, Jess. emoticon

I know your 7th forum had bad security settings, but didn't check any more after that.

As for your member who can't get in, are you saying he can't log into his account, and isn't receiving a password retrieval when he sends for it? If so, have him check the junk/spam folder of his email account.

Also, if he uses AOL, Verizon, or another ISP for his email, it could be that they're not sending it to him, because they often mistake emails from large sites as spam and block them before they ever reach the recipient. For this reason, we always recommend using a free email service like Yahoo or Gmail. For people who own their own domain, using an email account that comes with that domain can be another good option.

Hi again LG. I gave Neil instructions as to what to do because he had forgotten his password and couldn't get in. This is his answer to me. Quote:

Thanks Jess found password ..tried again with varibles still no go. Typed in user name and password using capitols, lower case first letter capitals etc...no go!

Also I have checked out a few forums on the board and still doing so. I also logged out to see if what I had changed had still kept the board 'closed' to non members. I wasn't being logged out because I could still get into the board even though I left the board completely and tried again from scratch. This happened a few times before I was logged out successfully.

Passwords are case-sensitive, so whatever it says in the email is exactly what he needs to use. If he tries pasting his password in, he needs to make sure there isn't an extra space at the end.

I see that your board is now open to anyone who has a Runboard account, but I don't think that's what you intended to do. You also have it set to membership by application, but the application will never show up because it's set so anyone with a Runboard account can read and post.

I set it back to require membership, since I don't think you meant to open it like that. If I was wrong, you or I can set it back, but if that's the case, you'll also want to change your membership gaining method.

For your 7th forum, do you want all your board's members to be able to view it and post in it? If so, you need to set it to:

Board's default
Board's default
Use board's memberlist

As it stands, all of your members can see it, but nobody will be able to post in that forum except you, your co-admin, and the 4 other people who are on that forum's member list.

About your logging out problem, I just logged out in Firefox and IE8 with no problems. What page are you taken to when you click on the logout link, and what browser are you using?

Thank you LG for closing my board again. Yes you did right. When I finally was able to log out I could see that the board was closed so not sure what happened after that. Perhaps I inadvertently opened it again.

I see that Neil has been in and posted so that problem appears to have been solved.

The 7th, 8th and 9th forums I keep closed to posters because they are for the results for our comps. I prefer them to be 'read only'. I haven't heard yet whether my other member has been able to post in the forum in which she couldn't. I will update you on that one when I hear from her.

As always you have been very helpful - thank you very much.

 - Jess.

Re: Security settings, login, logout

You're very welcome, Jess. It's my pleasure. emoticon

If you ever have trouble logging out again, try deleting your cookies. This should log you out automatically.

If your other member still can't post in that forum, please let me know which forum and I'll check those security settings for you.

Cheers! emoticon
