Edit Reason Field
Hi Guys,
I often come across edited posts on my board and others and there is usually no reason provided for the edit, which makes it a bit hard to understand what was added to original post.
This also applies to us admins who often have to edit other members posts, but we got into the habit of specifying the reason for the edit, so our members understand what was done.
I just thought that it'll be good to have a mandatory edit field available as part of the "EDIT" command button which has to be filled by anyone editing their post to state something like:
I also think that posts older than 24 hours should be locked and no editing should be allowed after that period (except by Admins). If someone wants to edit a post after the 24 hour period, they can quote their original post and add new information to it as part of a new reply.

Re: Edit Reason Field
Those are interesting suggestions, although I would leave it up to each board owner to decide whether they'd want to make the reason mandatory or lock editing, and maybe even set their own time limits on editing.
I occasionally go to a non-Runboard board (hey, I didn't tell them to build it where they did) that doesn't always add "Edited by" if you edit your post right away. I'm guessing that it might do that after a certain amount of time, and/or if someone else views it after you've posted. But, if nobody else views it before you can edit it, I see no reason for an "Edited by" or an edit reason, while I do think it would be nice to have an edit reason (mandatory only if the board owner wants it to be) for people who viewed a post before the edit.
Edit to add (hehe): Even if you make it mandatory to include a reason, people could get around that by adding a space, jibberish, or whatever. Just a thought.

Re: Edit Reason Field
If we had a feature which would tell us who's viewing the post/thread while we're typing our replies, maybe that would have helped a bit more to decide if the edit reason is really needed or not. At the moment we can only see who's online on our board and assume that they have viewed the reply we posted, so if we do decided to edit it, it'll be good to have an edit reason attached to it.
I do agree however that they can type whatever they like in that edit reason field if we make it mandatory, but most people will get used to it with time and use this feature properly if it's communicated well enough by board admins.
EDIT: Fixed spelling LOL

Re: Edit Reason Field
I know a "who's viewing which post/thread" feature has been requested at least a couple of times, and I also know that such a feature would require more calls to the database.
Sometime before I discovered Runboard, "edit" and "delete" links didn't show up at all for people who couldn't use them, from what I read, but Thor made them visible to everyone, because choosing who sees them required more calls to the database. At that time, he needed to cut back on those calls because Runboard (or maybe it was still Akheva back then?) couldn't handle the extra load.
Deducing from those two things, I would guess that we might not see a "who's viewing which post/thread" feature this year, unless (1) the RBNS conversion made this possible and Thor has the time and energy to implement one or (2) Thor has the time, energy, and any other resources required to make this possible, and then implement it.
I don't know what kind of programming would go into a time limit, but an edit reason might be easier to do. This is another guess on my part, as I'm not nearly as experienced in programming as Thor is, and for all I know, he might find the time limit to be easier.
Anyway, I'm just thinking out loud. I do know that we haven't seen the last of the improvements that will be made this month, and we may see another one by the end of this week. I'm quite pleased with what he's done so far, and the plans I know he has for the near future.
LOL @ your edit. I'm almost hoping I'll have a reason to edit this post.
Haha! Edited for clarification in my 2nd paragraph.

Re: Edit Reason Field
I agree. When you made that suggestion about subscription notification links, he jumped right to it. He said he rushed it and hopes he didn't break anything, but I'm sure you or Erika will let us know if it's not working properly.

It's working perfectly and am very grateful to Thor for acting on it so fast and to you for passing on the suggestion in a lighting speed too
