Add colours to Forum Separators

Hi
At present when I add a separator to my different forums they all appear in the same colour.
How do I change the colour so you get for examples "Sport" being green, "Music" being red, "News" in blue etc etc

I guess its somewhere in the Language sets but unsure so don`t want to go poking around.

thanks

Re: Add colours to Forum Serarators

This can change All the separators colors to 1 color unless overridden in CSS. For individual colors for individual forums you'll need to wait for a Global Admin or someone with more knowledge than I.

Control Panel :: Board management :: Edit colors and theme

Scroll down to Forum list table separator background color : in the Forum list layout options

Change the color to the desired Hex Code.

Re: Add colours to Forum Serarators

Hi Zeppo,

Go in to "Arrange Forums" and add <div>s around each category name, giving them each an appropriate id. For example, if your category name is "Main forums", you might want to use "main_forums" or just "main" as your id, like so:

<div id="main">Main forums</div>

Save those changes, then go into your CSS and look for .forumlist_separator_td

Between the { and } that come after that, add:

padding: 0;

If you don't see .forumlist_separator_td already in your CSS, then just add this:

.forumlist_separator_td { padding: 0; }

Also, add this:

.forumlist_separator_td br { display: none; }

For each of the categories, define them with a # before the id, defining padding and your backgrounds there.

Using the "main" example from above:

#main {
   padding: 3px;
   background: #cccccc url(http://[sign in to see URL]) top left repeat-x;
}

Change the parts in blue to suit your needs.

An added benefit to using ids instead of class names is that you can actually link directly to a category, which is great if you have a lot of forums. To link to the "main" category, you would use this:

<a href="[sign in to see URL]yourboardurl#main">Text for people to click on</a>

Notice the number (#) sign with both the css and with the link.

Thank you for helping me get into tutorial-writing mode, Zeppo. It will help me with IfYouCodeIt tonight. emoticon

Is that under "add new forum," or "manage names of forums" Lesa? I do not see a way to do that in "arrange forums" unless you mean we put that div in the separator box...

Hi Rick / Lesigner

Rick
It was under "Arrange Forums" and adding the <div id> before the forum name.

I played around with this and yee-har it worked !!(not that I ever doubted)
Took a bit of time to get the CSS to work as theres nothing worse than an itty bitty comma missing to send the whole shebang haywire. grrr

But it all works now and I can change them to different colours as required.

Lesigner
Again thanks for the instructions, clear and easy to follow for a relative novice. Its soooooo good to get exactly what you ask for in "Support" so I hurled some Karma your way.

I'm glad I could help, Zeppo. emoticon

You're right about that missing punctuation, and one thing that's good at catching it is the #validate_by_input]w3c CSS validator. It can be a little tricky to read at times, but if you paste the same thing into Notepad or ]Crimson Editor (I prefer Crimson because it makes code easier to read and shows the line numbers next to the lines), at least it will get you to the general area. If you don't find the error on the exact line number it gives you, look in the CSS above that line, because that is often where you'll find the problem.

Ta for the karma. emoticon

Coolness, I was just wanting to make double sure the <div>main</div> was really going in the separator box and not around the actual forum name (per the RB form set-up) emoticon
