Help with layout
Hello I'm new to runboard and am trying to set up my site. I was wondering if you could tell me if there is a way to make layout wider as my posts keep distorting the layout. I write tutorials and would love to use run board more. I'm using the pink pillows layout and have no idea where to do this.
I looked in the layout customisation but I'm a little scared to change anything without knowing what I'm doing. I would like the background lines to go closer to the edges of the screen...and make the Banner section wider

Welcome to Runboard, Honeywing! 
The problem with trying to make the board wider with the pink pillows layout is the background image it uses.

It's hard to see that, but if you open it in a graphics editor and re-size the height, you can see better what's happening.
If you want, I can crop out the two shaded side parts of that image and give them to you to upload, but if you know how, feel free. After you upload them, I can tell you how to use those pieces in a flexible-width (or whatever fixed width you choose) layout.
The banner graphic itself will need to be re-sized as well. Personally, I would make a piece of it tilable instead, use it as the background of the header, add your board name in HTML, and add the border and change the color of the text with CSS. Of course, I'll be happy to help you out with that as well. 
I noticed that you have a 5px font-size defined in your CSS for .ak_msg_master_table. If you keep it like that, any area that doesn't have its own font-size defined will be unreadable.
To get over your fear of touching things in the control panel, you should set up a test board. I even have a few myself, for testing out "can't be done" requests and such.

To make a test board, just do it the way you made your "real" board.

Name it honeystestboard or whatever you want to name it, pop in some jibberish for the keywords and description, choose the Pink Pillows layout, and we'll go from there.
I'll splice the graphics and set the code up at your test board tomorrow, if you want. After that, you should have a better idea of what to do with your banner.
As for the text, anything between 11px and 13px would be much better than 5.

I spliced the background image for you, which you can download in this zip. Unzip them and upload to your image host. If you don't have one, http://imageshack.us is pretty good for a free host. After uploading them, post the urls to the two images here, and I'll fix your test board up so you can change the width to whatever you want it to be.

I also took the "community logo" out of the layout/colors screen, because it appears above the HTML header by default, and it needs to be inside the header in order to make the board width flexible.
You will now find the banner in your CSS under #header h1:

When you make a new banner, change the url and height there as needed.
If you want to change the width of your board, look here in your CSS:
#container1 {
width: 930px; margin:0 auto;
background: #ffe5f4 url(http://images33.fotki.com/v1140/photos/6/627859/3251994/bgleft-vi.gif) left top repeat-y;
}
You will also need to look for all occurrences of this in your CSS:
width:865px;
...and change them relative to the new width of #container1. For example, if you change the board's width to 950px (via #container1), that would be 20px wider than it is now, so you would then add 20px to all of the 865's, making them 885px.

and I have no idea how to do any of what you suggested I was kinda hoping it was "yeah you have to change these numbers" lol....but not its seems. I would like to be able to change the banner to one that I make so maybe I could just adjust the background, may doing what you said about cropping it...if you don't mind helping that would be awesome.
