How to change the favicon (image) in the browser address bar

I'm still wondering how to change the smiley icon that appears in my browser's address bar, in the tabs across the top of my browser's main window and in the bookmarks list. Right now it is an upside down happy face. I don't want it to be an upside down happy face for my community and I would like to change it. How do I do this? Is it even possible at all? Let me know please!

Thanks and take care,
Omicron Ceti

Here you can make your own and get a code to insert at the beginning of your HTML

Re: How to change the favicon (image) in the browser address bar

Thanks Mooseman for your help. I followed your link and have successfully created a FavIcon for my forum. The problem now is how the heck do I apply this icon to my forum? I have gone into Manage Custom HTML Content and placed the code in between head tags, but this has had no effect. How do I apply the new FavIcon to my forum? Would really love to know!

Thanks and take care

If you are using IE, that could be why.

Moose had a discussion thread about it here:

Hi Rimmer. No, I'm using Netscape Browser 8.1 and nothing seems to work. Any ideas? Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks and take care,

Re: How to change the favicon (image) in the browser address bar

I use code like this put into Custom HTML (with no need for <head></head> tags):

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://mysite.com/images/favicon.jpg">

It works in FireFox, but has never worked in IE. I'm afraid I don't know about Netscape.

Hopefully someone else will have experience with tricky favicons.

Thanks Rimmer. I copied and pasted your line of code and made the appropriate changes to it and it worked perfectly. Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

To be on the safe side, I use the type expression too, in bold:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://mbp.tiddelibom.net/anifav.gif" type="image/gif"/>

Re: How to change the favicon (image) in the browser address bar

Hi Guys,

On the subject of adding a favicon, I am trying to get the animated version to work, but it just doesn't seem to pick-up the animated version of the favicon in IE and only displays a still image.

Is there a trick to enable the animated_favicon1.gif to work?

Have a look at the favicon on my test board HERE

EDIT: I have just tested it in Firefox and the animated version of the favicon is working fine. I guess this is an IE7 problem and/or limitation emoticon
