Other User Options

This post is not very important, so thought I’d write it now, as everything seems to be going rather smoothly.

For the first year or two that I was on here, I always enjoyed taking a look at past users’ profiles. Don’t ask me why, I’m just like that emoticon

Back then, you could use the “Search users and boards” feature to find every member in history. I thought this was really neat to have, but since the update from a couple of years ago, this function works only very inconsistently, and often only displays people that you have as “friends”. I don’t know if this has been done on purpose, so it’s harder to spy on other people (emoticon), but I preferred being able to search for all users.

My other query is the “10 most recent posts”. For people who haven’t posted since 2009 (or around there), no last posts show up. This was another change made by the update a couple years back. I know this was put into place so there weren’t links to deleted/private posts, but I much preferred the old style of being able to see the last posts, regardless of whether these posts were still available. Plus, the update caused a bit of collateral-damage in that even posts that ARE still available don’t show-up if the user hasn’t posted since 2009. I’m just wondering if you could bring all of these last posts back/consider implementing this change.

I know this might be more appropriate for “Feature Requests”, but I thought it fit a bit better in Q&A, since I’m just asking for older ideas to return.

Again, it’s unimportant, but I just always liked being able to find people, and see when they stopped posting lol.

Than you for reading emoticon

If you have the username, you can try Googling to see what shows up.

site:[sign in to see URL] Messup434

[url][sign in to see URL]

You can also use one specific board.

site:[sign in to see URL] btherunboarddirectory Messup434

[url][sign in to see URL]

Of course, this will only work on public boards/forums.

Re: Other User Options

(Sorry it's taken so long for me to reply.) Thank you for the response Jox, but my main thing is seeing their last posts.

I just think even having old links looks a bit better than that box being awkwardly empty. Or it'd at least be cool if there was a fix for people whose last posts ARE still around. Getting rid of all last posts (regardless of their availability) was a side-effect of ] this fix .

It's just my opinion, but I've seen many others confused about this, as well.

Thanks again for your response emoticon

Perhaps a compromise solution is possible? Last posts which are older than six months old could be coded to display with a text color other than that used for all "last post" links at present.

For example, the current text color used for the links is #000033, so at the point, a message board gets flagged for possible deletion the text color could get changed to #3333ff or #6699cc.

Just an idea...

Ooh, I like that idea.

Or, if this is even doable, you could mark all deleted/hidden topic links in a shade of red as a warning that the links are bad.

I wonder if Lesa has thoughts on this! emoticon

This wouldn't work for anyone who is color blind and/or blind enough to require an aural screen reader. We would need a different solution for the sake of accessibility.

Could it just be as-before? I know it could be a bit annoying to get dead links, but I liked how it looked - and if you're looking at peoples' last posts (me emoticon ), you probably have time for the old ones anyway emoticon

Or.. keep it so private posts don't show (since I know that's an issue) at all, but deleted ones will?

I don't know how it *can* be, but if someone has any public posts still existing at all, it would be nice to have links to the last *existing* public posts.

I wouldn't want any dead links, though. If there aren't any existing public posts to display in the profile of someone who has elected to show their last public posts, then I think it should have a note to that effect, not a bunch of dead links.

Re: Other User Options

Maybe that’s just me then - I like a mystery and trying to figure-out what the last topic posted in could have been about and what board it was on was fun for me (though I suspect only me). I often just use it to see when a person has last posted.

But if you could do the last 10 existing specifically, that’d be neat, too!

PS: Users whose last posts DO still exist can also have them lost with this - people who haven't posted since 2009 or prior are afflicted with this. Not sure what the exact cut-off day is, but I'm assuming it's the same date that live-feed functions were added. But EVERYONE from 2008 and before's last posts don't show, even though I know they do exist (because I remember from before the change a few years back). If you want a specific instance where I can try to prove this with, let me know!

On the other hand, the "search users and boards" is working better than ever now! emoticon Big kudos on that emoticon
